Your Self Assessment year

Five dates worth knowing

The Self Assessment year follows the same rhythm every cycle. We track every one of these on your behalf — it still helps to know what’s coming.

  1. 01
    6 April

    New tax year begins

The tax year for Self Assessment runs 6 April to 5 April.

  2. 02
    5 October

    Register with HMRC

Deadline to register if you became self-employed that tax year.

  3. 03
    31 October

    Paper return due

Deadline for paper Self Assessment submissions.

  4. 04
    31 January

    Online return & payment

Online filing deadline and balancing payment due to HMRC.

  5. 05
    31 July

    Second payment on account

Where applicable, your second advance payment falls due.

Why it matters

Miss a deadline once and HMRC remembers every year after.

Sole trader registration, allowable expenses, Class 4 National Insurance and the January balancing payment are not side tasks — they are the rhythm that keeps you trading without penalty letters.

Dinson & Co. exists so freelancers and sole traders in Nottingham and across the UK get accurate figures, on-time filings, and a named accountant who already knows the plan.

Ask a question

Anyone who is self-employed or a sole trader, a company director, a landlord, or who has untaxed income above certain thresholds generally needs to file a return with HMRC each year.

Paper returns are due by 31 October following the end of the tax year, and online returns by 31 January — the same date your balancing payment is due.

HMRC apply an initial fixed penalty, followed by further daily and percentage-based penalties the longer a return or payment stays outstanding, plus interest on late payments.

Sales invoices, expense receipts, bank statements and records of any other income, kept for at least five years after the filing deadline in case HMRC ask to see them.

Yes — we handle sole trader and self-employment registration with HMRC on your behalf, start to finish.

Let’s get your return filed properly, this year.
